Not being able to speak or to move freely all over the body.
An ischemic stroke.
This happens to Adriano Menei, a painter and teacher of Architecture at the “Guido Montauti” Arts High School in Teramo.
Born in Teramo in 1958, after a career started at the Arts High School of Teramo and continued with a degree in Set Design from the Academy of Fine Arts of L’Aquila, and the professional training in Stagecraft, in October 2018 is prematurely hit by this sly disease that suddenly bursts into his life and smashes takes away all.
Subjected to life-saving therapies and rehabilitation, despite a slight recovery, he still has difficulty walking and almost no eloquence. However, he makes up with the artistic world that has always come with him since 2020 because communication is innate in human beings.
In disability exists the ability to reinvent oneself and looking for unconceivable ways to express oneself: and what is the best way to restart than the passion for arts, a lifelong companion for Adriano?
It’s with his left hand, the opposite limb to the one employed before the stroke, that he tested for some attempts of writing, initially twitchy block letters tracing his name, and then going on to a real evolutionary excursus of learning and re-education to draw geometric, soft and concrete lines. This gives birth to still lifes and landscapes, inspired, at first, by the vision of famous and well-known artistic pieces of various art movements throughout history.
After these first attempts, real sketches, with uncertain and trembling lines, he gradually matured his own technique with pastel pencils through passionate, reactional, and timeless daily practice.
Until now his production includes more than 150 personal drawings that explore conscious and vivid mood states, vibrant pastel colors, exaggerated strokes, landscapes and still lifes.
Since 2020, the effort put into these works of art has become his only main expressive activity, which involves him daily in a zealous production and has reconnected him with the spirit that has always animated his mixed-technique painting production since the 90s.
A reconnection to his artistic flair and a new sense of life that notes even the disability cannot prevent or scratch.
